Using interviews for an SEO boost

Summary: Securing industry specific interviews on your website is a great way to get an SEO boost as a form of viral marketing/linkbait.

InterviewThe technology community has missed a beat when it comes to highlighting interviews with key industry experts. This tactic is a long standing trick that the rest of the business/celebrity communities have been using for years. The online world is now starting to catch up and make waves for itself.

You will notice that well-known television shows, magazines etc all make a big song and dance when they get the latest industry star on their show or as their cover star. Their publicity across a multitude of media channel gains them coverage over a cross section of media outlets, including across the web. This is something businesses on the web should be doing and capitalising on.

So the best advice we can give is to get asking – what have you got to lose?! A personal email to an industry leader takes just a few minutes to draft up and the potential gain definitely outweighs that time spent.

Some tips:

  • Think about your business/industry sector, who is big right now? Try and secure interviews with industry leaders who are frequently blogged and twittered about.
  • If an interview isn’t possible, start blogging about other places they have done interviews or shows that they are appearing at, for example, where you’re both going to be at the same business expo.
  • If you’re unsure who to interview, a great place to start would be doing case studies of past clients – explaining what you did for them from start to finish.
  • If your business is more about selling products, do a video on who you’re now supplying, any big contracts etc (with their permission). Have a representative from your company and theirs have a chat on film – this will create a video that you can both post on your websites.

When you add an interview to your website, don’t forget to give it the best possible chance of going viral.

  1. Link it up on your website – not just from one page!
  2. Add it to your user and XML sitemaps
  3. Resubmit your XML sitemap to Google (via Webmaster tools)
  4. Add a post or two on Twitter
  5. Add a post to your company blog
  6. Digg it!
  7. Stumble it!
  8. Jump tags it!
  9. Mister Wong it!
  10. Facebook it!
  11. In fact, add it to any social media accounts you have which we haven’t already mentioned!
  12. Last but not least, consider issuing a press release.
