How blogs are changing the face of the web

Summary: Blogs have changed the Internet landscape, and have opened it up to everyone and anyone who wants to have a go at building and managing a blog or even website. You could be one of them!

WordpressIn recent years, millions of blogs have appeared on the web and WordPress is at the forefront leading the charge for change.  Blogs have totally transformed the publishing world.  This transformation opens up a big opportunity for businesses like yours.

When the Internet began, websites were static, meaning once your site was published to the web, that was how it would stay. You had to contact web developers/designers for even minor changes.

Then along came the blog…..

The blog has changed the face of the boring website, into an ever-changing,  interactive creation. Blogs are so simple, anyone and everyone can post, manage and maintain one.

With nearly 10 million downloads of the latest version, WordPress is no longer just a simple blogging platform. Many business sites are run purely on WordPress templates, with some design changes to incorporate company colours, logos etc. This is down to two things, mainly: the ease of use and open source development, which together have turned WordPress into a powerful business tool and a free one at that.

Here are some ways in which WordPress is changing the face of the web -

1. Everyone now has publishing power

With the invention of the blog, it means now everyone has the power to publish. Anyone can start a blog, and start publishing. Having a blog gives them a way to express their opinions what ever they maybe, positive or negative, and potentially reach a global audience.

In theory, someone armed with nothing short of a mobile phone can compete on the global playing field.  A student can now attend the same functions as professional journalists and share his/her views via a blog. If the student can attract followers/fans to his/her blog, he/she is can compete in the same arena as national and international press.  Blogging therefore puts the average person, and indeed, the smaller business, in a powerful position.

Of course, a knock on effect of this is that the average person can damage large companies quickly if they manage to reach a big audience with their posts.  Especially with how fast things can now spread via social media channels.

2. Anyone can build and manage a blog

WordPress has opened up the web to everyone, due to its user friendly layout and low cost – WordPress itself is a free to use.  With it being free, it is appealing for anyone who wants to have a go at designing and managing their own site.

WordPress is structured in such a manner that it enables anyone to navigate around no matter their experience level.  It gives the user the option to change everything from colour and font to what is shown on screen; which widgets appear where. It also enables the user to time when posts are published in advanced. Everything is just a click away meaning anyone can be a blogger.

3. Participation isn’t just encouraged but expected – sharing and commenting are the norm

Blogs are crafted and created in a way that encourages participation from readers.

As the line between website and blogs blurs together, many businesses are now incorporating their blogs into their websites.  Blogs and other social media platforms have changed the way in which businesses communicate and interact with their customers. Online communication is no longer a one way process, but in fact two-way. It is also more engaging than ever before and informative for both parties – at least, when the business involved takes time to build and establish a community that customers want to be a part of and feel valued in.

4. Websites are evolving

Internet users now expect a level of professionalism to any site they visit and spend time on. If a site isn’t up to their stands or expectations, they quickly leave.  Nowadays sites that aren’t up to stand reflect badly on the company.

With the ever changing Internet market and the decreasing costs this has opened up a big opportunity for small businesses to increase their web image. The Internet is in fact leveling the business playing field for small businesses and giving them an equal chance agest large national/international brands.

Blogging into the future

Although history has yet to prove the impact of blogs and blogging, it is safe to say blogging platforms like WordPress have changed the way we use the Internet and the way content is published. The power of blogging has made it possible for anyone to reach a global audience quickly and for very small cost, if any.

Adding social media to the mix, along with blogging, anyone  or any business can get global coverage with good content. The power of blogging knows no bounds and it is the way forward for any business wanting a successful future online.
