Using blogs to obtain links for SEO

Blogs work wonders for SEOSummary:

  • A blog is a good opportunity for you to create links to your site
  • Blogging is a big time commitment if you want to get it right
  • You need to obtain links to your blog
  • You need to establish trust and respect with quality content

So you’re looking for good quality links to your website and you understand that these need to be from relevant, trustworthy sites.  It’s hard work persuading decent sites to give you the links you need, isn’t it?  One way to get good links to your site is via blogging.

Don’t think that blogging means easy links though.  You need to blog regularly, which means committing a decent amount of time to your blog and ensuring you keep it up to date with decent content, at least two or three times a week, that people will want to read, share and link to.  In short, for blogging to be effective, you need to get a few things right: the content, the marketplace and the promotion.

In terms of promotion, blogging is more successful if you can build your reputation as an expert.  To do this you need to create quality, original content that can’t be found elsewhere on the web.  Even when you do this, don’t expect people to come flooding to your blog – think of it this way, how many blogs do you know about out there, which discuss topics that interest you? Probably not many – but there are hundreds, thousands!  Another knock on effect of this is that even when people do stumble across your excellent content, they’re less likely to give you a link as you’re not established or ‘trusted’.

So building up your blog or blogs takes a bit of time, effort and patience – but it’s very effective for link building. People link to your blog, increasing the page rank and you can then link back to your site, passing over link juice.  You can link to new articles on your site as you create them, which will not only build a page rank for new content but will also get those articles spidered a lot faster.

So what are our top blogging tips?

Number 1 – your blog needs links, just like your website.  The best place to get these from is other blogs!  Try to build relationships with other bloggers – especially trusted bloggers.  Reply to posts on their blogs but be careful about inserting spammy links – only insert a link to your blog if it is directly relevant to the post you’re discussing, and adds some value in the eyes of the reader

Number 2 – try and establish trust and respect – don’t go barging in just asking for a link.  You need to show that you have quality content and that you’re there to provide information to people.  As you create good content and post on other blogs, you’ll build your relationship with other bloggers and they’ll be more inclined to link to you anyway.

Number 3 – as you create content, try and create it around the content discussed by the bloggers you really want links from. So if you see them discussing a particular topic, try and create an original, useful article on that topic.  You’ll find it more likely that they’ll either allow links to this in your comments, or, in time, link to the article without being asked!

Number 4 – following this strategy, you can expect links from other bloggers that you’re not targeting, as they see your links appear on well know blogs.

Number 5 – try and build relationships with people commenting on your blog by providing a personal response to each comment.  Not only will this build your content but your relationship will give the commenter the impression that you’re genuinely interested in what they have to say, encouraging them to return and provide more feedback and comments in future.  The discussion is also likely to attract more links if constructive!
