What is the best strategy for launching lots of new content?

Summary: Wondering what the best strategy is for launching a lot of new content on your website? Here’s a simple and effective strategy to enable you to successfully launch a lot of new web pages and not have to wait months to rank in search engines.

Internet contentEvidence shows that when launching a new website or several thousand pages at once, search engine do not like all the new content at one go – it often takes them a long time to rank the pages (even up to several months).

A good proven strategy to use when launching a lot of new pages at once is to drip feed the pages onto the Internet.

A three week strategy for launching 1,000 new pages would be as follows,

  • Day one, launch the first 500 pages
  • Day seven, launch a further 250 pages
  • Day twelve, launch a further 125 pages
  • Day fifteen, launch 75 pages
  • Day eighteen, launch the final 50 pages.

From research results show that this way is liked by Google.  Don’t launch your bulk content in too much of a pattern – e.g. 50 pages a day – you get better results from keeping the numbers uneven.

Also be wary of something that’s know as ‘the sandbox effect’ (also referred to as ‘the sandbox’ ’sandboxing or ‘the Google penalty’).  The existence of this isn’t confirmed but many SEO experts believe it exists.  The ’sandbox effect’ refers to Google temporarily reducing the page rank of new domains, placing them in an imaginary ’sandbox’. It’s thought that this happens to counter the ways that SEO experts try to manipulate Google’s page ranking system – for example, by creating a lot of inbound links to a new website from other websites that they own (NB: on this point, I’ve heard experts comment that Google can be suspicious about the creation of a lot of links from the same server anyway!).

SEO experts also have observed a ‘reverse sandboxeffect’ where new pages with good content that don’t have inbound links are temporarily increased in rank to encourage organic building of the web.  Neither can be confirmed but it’s worth bearing in mind when releasing a lot of new content – it’s possible you might see some strange things happen to your rankings and to how the new content is treated.  In our opinion, whether or not the sandbox (or reverse sandbox) effect exists, it’s best to release your content in dribbles to Google anyway – we’ve had the best results when we’ve done this for our customers in the past, and we wouldn’t do it any other way now.  But don’t be alarmed to see a drop in rankings when you start to make changes, especially when you start to add a lot of content (assuming it’s good content!) – they will recover in time.
